Opening doors and eyes about hunger Hunger problems exist in every community. So do aimless high school students. Andy Macklin brought hunger issues and high school students together, face-to-face. Working with the Oregon Service Corps, Andy helped plan, organize and conduct a door-to-door hunger support campaign in communities throughout the state. Mentoring high school youth in the effort, Andy helped local students learn about the issues of hunger and joined them in knocking on doors to inform people of the resources available in their area. The campaign also included food drives, talent shows and cookouts to build awareness and support. It was an eye-opening experience for everyone involved, including Andy. They all got an up-close look at the effects of hunger and how it impacts the lives of people who struggle daily to survive. Each person they spoke with had their own personal story to tell. Students came to understand the “who, why and how” of hunger, and they saw what was needed to help the poor in their communities. Andy believes it was a lesson they (and he) will long remember. |
