Camp Sunrise

Rising and shining as a camp counselor
Matthew Alland

Like a moth to a flame, Matthew was drawn to Camp Sunrise the minute he saw it. For the past six years, Matthew has served as a counselor at the camp, which is a therapeutic program for children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS. The children, many of whom come from underprivileged homes, enjoy a week of fun in a natural, caring environment.

About two years ago, the sun began to set on Camp Sunrise. They were in dire financial straits for a variety of reasons. Knowing Matthew’s background as a business consultant, the board asked him for advice. He organized a committee to examine their options and recommend a direction. Two alternatives became apparent: continue as a 501(c)3 organization and fund themselves, or merge with a larger AIDS organization and leverage its assets and fundraising capabilities.

To determine which path to take, Matthew formed two teams and guided them in making a formal business case for each alternative. The two proposals were presented to the board and a final decision was made to merge with the larger AIDS organization. As a result, Camp Sunrise is now on solid financial ground.

Matthew enjoys being with the kids at camp every year. ACME’s Community Service program enables him to do it. From what we’ve heard, he makes an outstanding camp counselor (as well as a very tasty s’more).
